Gertrude Eva Chess

Gertrude Eva Chess, 93, Houghton Lake, died Jan. 4, 2018, at her home.

A funeral service, officiated by the Rev. George Spencer, was held Jan. 8 at Houghton Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in Lake City Cemetery.

She was born March 4, 1924, in Logan Township, Ogemaw County, the daughter of John and Eva (Miller) Meiser. She married Josiah (Joe) Chess and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Chess was a long-time resident of Houghton Lake where she worked and retired from Consumers Energy. She graduated from Flint Business College and worked for the tank plant there during World War II. She was a founding member of the National Corvette Restorers Society. She enjoyed painting, quilting and sewing teddy bears. She was a member of Houghton Lake United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her stepson-in-law, Raymond Godell; stepson, Bill Chess; and brothers, Floyd Meiser and Ronald Meiser.

She is survived by her children, Sandra Wendel of Roscommon, Roger (Carol) Wendel of Allouez and Wendel (Gretchen) Wendel of Grand Cayman, BWI; stepchildren, Grace Godell of St. Ignace and Mary Jo (Chris) Leverett of Eatontown, NJ; stepdaughter-in-law, Judy Chess of Culpepper, VA; brothers, Calvin Meiser of West Branch, Carl Meiser of Stafford, TX and William Meiser of West Branch; sisters, Alice Morache and Dorothy Tate both of Boise, ID; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
