What would ‘inspire divine retribution?’

In a letter to the editor appearing in the Jan. 4 issue of the Resorter (“Re-examine lifestyles in new year”), Parker Seiler states “God chose the Jews as His people.”

If that were so, how is it that so many prayers went up unanswered just 80 years ago? Across central Europe in the 1940s, Jews were degraded, robbed, made homeless, hauled off in cattle cars, made slaves, starved and gassed or burned alive by the millions. If the Holocaust of God’s chosen people was not enough to inspire divine intervention, what would? If the industrial-scale evil of the Nazis wasn’t enough to inspire divine retribution, what would?
