The theme for the 68th annual winter carnival is “country western.”

The fun starts at 6 p.m. at the Playhouse, 1701 West Houghton Lake Dr., Prudenville.

Folks are encouraged to bring their satchels full of gold with them, as Auctioneer Gary “Punk” Kochensparger will be on hand to auction off the first 10 Tip-up Town badges, first 10 places in line for the Polar Bear Dip and the first 10 commemorative Tip-up Town lures.

TOMFOOLERY OR TRUE CANDIDATE? Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Akin said the chamber received another mysterious letter from “Matt Dillon Jr.” The anonymous letter asks if this Matt Dillon Jr. guy is “for real” and if he will show up at the Kick-off. Akin said she does not know who has been writing to the chamber, as the return address is R.R. 1 Gunsmoke trail, Dodge City, KS, 67801. (Photo by Cheryl Holladay) TOMFOOLERY OR TRUE CANDIDATE? (Photo by Cheryl Holladay) This year’s Grand Marshal Sue Jacobs, longtime Tip-up Town volunteer, will be introduced, as will this year’s Hometown Hero, former POW James Nielsen of Houghton Lake.

Three Tip-up queen candidates will also be introduced, Stephanie Eckstorm, Keeley Woods and Kat Haser (candidate Sarah Williams withdrew). These Houghton Lake High School seniors previously participated in the Miss Houghton Lake Scholarship Program.

They will be presented at the Kick-off, but the 2018 queen will be announced at the outdoor stage at noon the first Saturday of Tip-up Town, as will the mayor and marshal.

Candidates for the 2018 mayor and marshal – “Mountain Climber” Marc Milburn for mayor and “Buffalo Hunter” Bruce “Buck” Olson for marshal – are expected to run under the “Gold Fish Party” banner.

Between the two of them, they have 45 years of military service, Milburn in the Marines and Olson in the Navy, and both are Free Masons and members of Houghton Lake United Methodist Church. Milburn is a Roscommon County commissioner, while Olson is the Lake Township land use officer.

“We care about this community and would be proud to represent our community,” said Milburn, who has jumped in the Polar Bear Dip about a dozen times and was once the oldest jumper three years in a row.

However, there may be a stand- off in Dodge City, as a mysterious letter-writer has contacted the Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce yet again.

The letter, titled “Week before Kick-off,” arrived by post Saturday at the chamber. Unsigned, it reads: “The whole town has been a buzz about this Matt Dillon Jr. guy. Is he for real? Will he show up? Or is this just a case of Tip-up Town Tomfoolery. Find out for yourself at the Tip- up Town Kick-off Saturday nite.”

Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Akin said she does not know who “Matt Dillon Jr.” may be or if he (or she) will show up at the Kick-off. She was informed, however, that Milburn and Olsen are willing to run for mayor and marshal, but only if they are uncontested.

Spur-of-the-moment candidates for mayor and marshal may also throw their hats in the ring at the Kick-off.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, folks are welcome to stay at the Playhouse for an after party at 8 p.m. For $10 per person, guests may enjoy a pig roast dinner. Greg Robinson of Great Lakes Painting, Houghton Lake, will be donating a pig and cooking it up.

In addition, a drawing will be held for a 1988 Bayliner, donated by Willis John Cashman of Houghton Lake. The package includes a cuddy cabin, an inboard motor, life jackets and Shorelander trailer. The drawing will be held at 8 p.m. at the Playhouse.

Last year’s Tip-up Town Queen Taylar Akin will also present to the Houghton Lake Lions Club the money she raised for the organization last year.
